Self Storage Made Simple: How to Choose the Right Storage Unit

SafeStorage Team · 30 September 2026
Nobody wakes up excited about self storage. You start looking because something in your life has shifted. The house sale went through faster than the purchase. The builders are starting on Monday.

Your spare room has quietly turned into a warehouse for things you can't throw away and can't live with either.Whatever brought you here, the question is the same: where do I put all this, and how do I know it will be looked after?

This guide walks through how self storage works in the UK, how to work out what size storage unit you need, and what to check before you hand over your belongings.

What is self storage, really?

Self storage is rented space for your belongings. You take a storage unit for as long as you need it, keep your things there, and take them back when life settles down.

The traditional version means hiring a van, driving to a facility on the edge of town, carrying everything in yourself and padlocking the door. It works, but it eats a weekend and usually a friendship or two.

The newer version is managed self storage, which is what we do at SafeStorage. You tell us what you have, our team come to your door, pack and collect it and move it into a storage unit at one of our UK warehouses.

When you want it back, you ask and it comes back to you. You still decide what goes in and when it comes out. You just don't do the lifting.

Who uses a storage unit?

More people than you'd think. There are roughly four groups:

People moving home: Completion dates rarely line up. A storage unit bridges the gap between leaving one home and getting the keys to the next, and it means you aren't living out of boxes at a relative's house. Our household storage service was built for this.

People renovating: Dust gets everywhere. Moving furniture out before the work starts protects it and gives your builders room to work quickly.

People going away: Students between terms, families posted abroad, anyone taking a long trip. Paying rent on an empty flat just to house a sofa makes little sense.

Businesses: Office space is expensive, and a surprising amount of it is taken up by things nobody touches: archive boxes, spare desks, seasonal stock, old IT kit. Moving that into business storage gives the space back to the people who work there.

There's a fifth group too: people who simply want their home back. A loft full of baby clothes, a garage you can't park in, a box room with no room in it. Self storage lets you keep the things that matter without living around them.

How to work out what size storage unit you need

This is where most people go wrong, and they nearly always overestimate. A well-packed storage unit holds far more than you'd expect, because it's stacked to the ceiling in a way your living room never is.

A rough guide:
  • A few boxes and bags: student belongings, seasonal clothing, books, sports equipment. A small storage unit the size of a cupboard.
  • The contents of one room: a bed, a wardrobe, a chest of drawers and ten to fifteen boxes fit in something close to a small garden shed.
  • A one or two bedroom flat: think of half a single garage.
  • A three bedroom house: would require a single garage, sometimes a little more if you have heavy furniture or lots of garden equipment.
The easiest way to get it right is not to guess at all. Make a quick list room by room, or walk round with your phone and take photos. Send that to us through the free quote form and we'll tell you what size you need.

What to look for in a self storage company

Most self storage websites look alike, so you have to ask questions. These are the ones worth asking.

How secure is it?

ask what security is in place (not if there is any) ask for CCTV which is monitored 24 hours and controlled access to the building into which you are storing, so only authorised personnel can get in. Fire alarm systems installed throughout. A storage unit for your business could hold excess stock, exhibition stands, furniture from an office you've downsized or equipment waiting to be redeployed. Because everything is barcoded you have an actual live inventory rather than a spreadsheet that no one trusts.

How will you know where your things are?

This matters more than people realise. If you store forty boxes and need one of them in March, someone has to find it. We barcode every item and box when it's collected, so your inventory is tracked from your front door to the storage unit and back again. You can see what you've stored online, without ringing anyone.

Is the building clean and pest free?

It's not a glamorous question, but fabric, paper and wooden furniture all suffer if a building isn't looked after. Our warehouses are pest controlled on a regular schedule.

How flexible is the contract?

Life doesn't run to a timetable. Your house purchase may complete in three weeks or three months. Look for self storage with monthly terms and no long lock-in. With us you can store for a short spell or for years, and there's no deposit to pay at the start.

How do you get things back?

Ask how much notice is needed and whether you can have part of your storage unit returned rather than all of it. We deliver back to your door on request, whether that's a single box or everything.

Is the company part of the wider industry?

The Self Storage Association UK publishes standards and consumer guidance for the industry. It's a useful, neutral place to read up before you commit to any provider.

Self storage for businesses and documents

Business self storage is a different job from household storage. The volumes are larger, things move in and out more often, and someone in your team needs to know exactly what's held where.

A storage unit for a business may contain surplus inventory, exhibition stands, furniture from a downsized office, or equipment that needs to be relocated. With everything barcoded, you get a live inventory rather than an Excel spreadsheet that no one wants to trust.

Paper records need more care still. Solicitors, accountants, clinics and schools are all required to keep certain files for years, and those files contain personal data. Under UK data protection law, how you store them is your responsibility.

The Information Commissioner's Office sets out what organisations must do, and it's worth a read if you're not sure where you stand.

Our document storage service is designed around those rules. Files are indexed, tracked and retrievable on request, and when the retention period ends they can be securely destroyed with a certificate to prove it.

How to pack for a storage unit

Good packing is what makes things come out of storage in the condition they went in. If our team is packing for you, this is taken care of. If you're doing some of it yourself, a few habits make a real difference.
  1. Use proper boxes: Supermarket boxes collapse under weight. Double-walled boxes of the same size stack neatly and safely.
  2. Heavy things in small boxes: Books go in small boxes, duvets go in large ones. Your back, and ours, will be grateful.
  3. Label two sides, not the top: Once boxes are stacked, the top is hidden. Write the room and the contents on the sides.
  4. Take furniture apart where you can: Bed frames and table legs come off easily. Tape the screws in a bag to the frame.
  5. Wrap, don't squash: Mattress covers, furniture blankets and paper for glassware are worth the small effort.
  6. Clean and dry everything first: Fridges should be defrosted and left to dry with the door open. Garden tools should be wiped down.
  7. Keep a list: Even with barcode tracking, your own note of what's in box 12 saves time later.

What you can't put in a storage unit

Every self storage company has a similar list, and it exists for everyone's safety. Leave out anything flammable or explosive such as gas bottles, paint thinners and fireworks. Leave out food and anything perishable, plants, animals, and anything illegal.

Cash and irreplaceable documents like passports are better kept with you.Almost everything else is fine. Furniture, white goods, clothes, books, bikes, tools, business stock, files and even motorcycles can all go into a storage unit.

How it works with SafeStorage

We've tried to take the hard parts out of self storage. There are four steps.

1. Tell us what you need: Fill in the quote form or call us. It takes a couple of minutes, and there's no obligation.
2. We come to you: On the day that you schedule, our team will arrive and pack everything for you, barcoding each item before leaving your home or office.
3. We store it securely: Your belongings go into a monitored, access-controlled warehouse and stay there until you want them.
4. We bring it back: Ask for one item or the whole lot, and we deliver it to your door.
SafeStorage has been doing this since 2015, and the UK service is built on what we've learned from customers in every kind of situation. You can read more about us and how we started.

Where we operate

We currently serve customers across major UK cities, with more being added. If you're looking for self storage in the capital, see storage in London. In the North West, we cover storage in Manchester, and in the Midlands, storage in Birmingham. Not in one of those three? Check all UK locations for your area.

Common questions about self storage

1. Is there a minimum stay?

No long commitment is needed. Short term storage units are available, and you can extend month by month if your plans change.

2. Do I need to be home for the collection?

Someone should be there to show the team what's going on and to check the inventory before it leaves.

3. Can I add more things later?

Yes. If you need more room, we move you to a larger storage unit or add space alongside.

4. How quickly can I get something back?

Tell us what you need and we'll arrange delivery. For business customers with urgent requests, faster retrieval is available in most areas.

5. What if I don't know how much I have?

Most people don't. Send us a list or a few photos and we'll work it out with you.

Ready when you are

Choosing self storage shouldn't be another thing to worry about during a move, a renovation or a busy year at work. Find a company that is clear about its security, tracks your belongings properly, doesn't tie you into a long contract, and brings your things back when you ask.
